Saudi cities to join Earth Hour

Several Saudi cities will participate in the annual Earth Hour on March 19 as part of international efforts to highlight the effects of climate change and pollution on the planet.
Around 7,000 cities will be participating in the event, which will see lights being switched off for one hour between 8:30 and 9:30 at night, said Ajlan Alajlan, executive director for Earth Hour in Saudi Arabia.

Alajlan was quoted as saying by a local publication recently that teams of Saudis are working with global partners on the event, which is supported by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and other organizations. Saudi cities have been participating in the event for the past seven years, he said.
Alajlan said that Saudi teams are also working with government bodies across the country to ensure participation. More information is available for the public on www.60ksa.org.
He said more effort should be made to educate families, and private and government bodies to help protect the environment.
“In 2015, WWF’s Earth Hour grew to become the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment. While the global lights out remains an impactful visual call-out, its true impact is starting to be seen in areas and communities fighting climate change on an everyday basis,” the organization stated on its website.
